Tallahassee and North Florida provides many different experiences for hunters and woodsmen. With plenty of Management Areas and large private land owners in the surrounding area most will find areas that hold many types of game.

Deer hunting has to be by far the most popular form of hunting in our area. With a large and healthy whitetail population, many hunters find numerous places and available properties that cater to the deer hunter. There are numerous large hunting clubs or leases as well as Wildlife Management Areas within the surrounding area and counties.

Turkey hunting has become a very popular form of hunting over the last several years. With the help of the National Wild Turkey Federation and FWC the wild turkey has made a roaring come back in the counties surrounding Tallahassee. With the state bag limit at two birds per hunter for the Florida spring gobbler season it gives the hunter a couple chances to try to trick an old tom. Many of the same deer hunting clubs and leases offer turkey rights or have separate leases for the Turkey season. These clubs along with the WMAs in North Florida provide many different areas to chase wild turkeys.

The best ducking hunting in Tallahassee can be found on many of the plantations. However, many hunters take to the local lakes in the area to target Ringnecks, Wood Ducks, and Green Wing Teal. You will occasionally find other ducks as well, but these three species are the majority. Lake Jackson, Lake Iamonia, & Lake Miccosukee are the three most popular lakes in Leon County. However, you can hunt Lake Talquin, Lake Lafayette, and many hunters travel over to Lake Seminole. If you do decide to setup a spread on Jackson, Miccosukee, or Iamonia be sure you check the current FWC regulations for motor size and blind regulations. As of 2008 there is a 10HP limit on Miccosukee during duck season. Iamonia is electric only except on youth hunt days. The use of permanent blinds is prohibited in Leon County Lakes.

Dove hunting is still a popular sport in the early fall and late summer. With a good dove field becoming harder to find it?s always a treat to be part of a ?good? shoot once or twice a year. Your best luck of hunting doves in our area is usually on a corn, millet, or peanut field. Many farmers will lease these fields to ?dove clubs? or sell individual spots for hunts. Florida Wildlife Commission also sells Dove Club Permits for their fields, but there is not many in the Tallahassee area. The closest management area with a dove field is Joe Bud Management Area in Gadsden County. Click here for a map of all the State Managed Dove Fields.
